Become a DONA certified Labor Doula
Doula training focuses on the emotional needs of women in labor and non-medical physical and emotional comfort measures. The program requires that participants have some prior knowledge, training and experience relating to childbirth, and consists of an intensive two to four day seminar, including hands-on practice of such skills as relaxation, breathing, positioning and movements to reduce pain and enhance labor progress, touch, and other comfort measures.
This workshop is a Doulas of North America (DONA) approved training. For certification, the doula must have a background of work and education in the maternity field, or she must observe a series of childbirth classes or equivalent. She must also complete the following: a doula workshop course offered by a DONA Approved Doula Trainer, a breastfeeding requirement, required reading, development of a resource list for her clients, an essay that demonstrates understanding of the integral concepts of labor support and a Basic Knowledge Self Assessment Test. Lastly, she provides positive evaluations from clients, doctors or midwives and nurses along with detailed observations from a minimum number of births.
This three day seminar includes topics such as: coping skills, massage techniques for labor, sound Doula ergonomics, promoting partner Involvement, medical interventions; interpersonal skills; and tips to market your business. Includes an introductory day for those who have not attended a childbirth education series (this is required for certification)

Become a DONA certified Postpartum Doula
Postpartum doula training focuses on preparing the doula to support the family after birth and to help them have the best possible outcomes. She learns about the physical and psychological needs of the postpartum period and development of the newborn. The doula receives training on breastfeeding skills and support, support of the woman with postpartum depression, support for the partner, fostering bonding, multiples, grief and loss, and the importance of referrals to competent and appropriate professionals and support groups. Training includes educating the family on infant care, newborn characteristics, coping skills and supporting the mother.
This workshop is a Doulas of North America (DONA) approved training. It will satisfy DONA requirements for classroom hours. The course is designed for those that are exploring new career options, or childbirth professionals and others already offering support to new and expectant families. Throughout the class participants will engage in exercises, activities, and discussion designed to integrate new information with personal and professional experiences. The course covers the basics of postpartum care , including business start up. This fun and interactive workshop will introduce the role of the postpartum Doula. A valuable course for students just beginning their career as well as those seeking to enrich their existing Doula practice.
Instructor: Betsy Schwartz has been working as a professional postpartum Doula since 1992, and has been training postpartum doulas since 1995. Betsy established Tenth Month Doula Services,Inc., in South Florida in 1994, and is now offering Doula services in Citrus and Monroe counties in North Florida. Betsy is a founding member of the Coalition for Improving Maternity Services, Inc. (CIMS), and is President of the Birth Network of Florida, a non-profit corporation whose mission is to educate the community about the normalcy of birth.
