Over the course of the last twenty to thirty years, having a baby in the United States has become a technology-ridden event, rampant with testing, intervention and surgery. normal has come to refer less to the natural process of birth and more to what is considered commonplace in American obstetrical practices. There are two definitions of the word normal in the webster’s dictionary. The first, “typical, conforming with, adhering to, or constituting a norm, standard, pattern, level, or type”; accurately describes the birth experience of most women in the united states. the second definition, “functioning or occurring in a natural way; lacking observable abnormalities or deficiencies” more closely reflects the characterization of normal as applied by midwives and captures the experiences of most women who are in the care of midwives.
